Time and Space to Grow

A poem created and shared by artist and musician, Natalie Willis, in response to a collection of ‘magic moments’ drawings of one family during weekly Music Garden early years community sessions at Magic Acorns. Filmed and edited by Lewis Wickwar.

A Little Acorn was born one day
to a glorious Oak who both wanted to play.
The thought of attending a play group was scary,
and the glorious Oak, understandably, was wary.

The Oak heard of a session called Sensory Play.
They were brave to try, and Little Acorn seemed happy to stay.
The space was safe, calming, and sure.
The playful practitioners had a great sense of fun and rapport.

Time and space was given to grow,
and Little Acorn and the Oak soon got into the flow.
They returned each week, and as confidence grew,
a new idea was forming, a new adventure brewed.
The wonder of what other groups here were like.
Maybe Music Garden would also turn out all right.

Little Acorn and Oak decided to go,
and once again on attending, their confidence grew.
The group was bigger and more acorns were there,
but the Little Acorn and Oak seemed free from cares.

Little Acorn began to move away from the Oak,
exploring the space with a carefree abandonment and a huge smile on their face.
The Oak just beamed and commented with pride.
“It was the first time this had happened” and the whole room seemed to sigh.

The Little Acorn began to remember a song.
Preempting the hello tune with arms lifted up strong.
In the middle of the circle, they were confident to be,
with arms and legs moving excitedly.

Peek-a-boo games were played with others,
hiding and emerging from scarf-like covers.
A single word “baba” was a delight to hear
when they remembered the place where the bubbles had appeared.

Who knows where this adventure next will go?
But the Little Acorn and the Oak have definitely grown.
